Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that affects moods by experiencing periods of mania or hypomania followed by depression and intermittent periods of normalcy. A manic episode is when the person experiences unusually elevated mood, which can at times lead to activities such as large purchases. The depressed state typically occurs afterwards and results in the individual feeling persistent despair over a long period.
