How To Care For Someone Struggling With Mental Health

Mental illness or mental health problems affect 20% of Canadians every year and every individual is directly or indirectly affected either through someone they know or themselves experiencing mental health struggles. Since the effects of mental health are so prevalent, it is important to understand how to care for those who may be experiencing poor mental health if you have not experienced it yourself.

It can be difficult to understand what your partner, family or friend may be going through, however, there are some things you can do to show your support. First, you should identify whether they are struggling with their mental health and be aware of the signs. Educate yourself on their diagnosis or symptoms and be prepared to help. Listening to them and acknowledging their struggles will also provide a stronger bond and allow them to feel heard. Lastly, make sure to engage in personal self-care and have a support system to keep your own mental health strong.
